Insider Tips

  • 💴
Carry yen cash. Many smaller stalls at Hirome Market and local shops are cash-only. ATMs at Japan Post branches and 7-Eleven accept foreign cards.
  • 🚌
Confirm shuttle times early. The return shuttle schedule is fixed — missing it means a ¥2,000 taxi. Note the last shuttle time when you board.
  • 🍽
Eat katsuo tataki. This straw-fire seared bonito is Kochi's culinary identity. Hirome Market is the easiest place; ask for 'tataki teishoku' (set meal).
  • 🚃
Use the Tosaden tram downtown. The vintage street tram links JR Kochi Station, Harimayabashi, and the castle area for ¥200 flat. Exact change or IC card.
  • Kochi is Japan's rainiest city. Pack a compact umbrella — afternoon showers are common even in otherwise fine weather.
