Getting Ashore

How you reach Waiheke depends on your ship — most cruise passengers ferry over from Auckland, while boutique and expedition ships tender directly to Matiatia Wharf.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
If your ship docks in Auckland (most lines)Walk 2-5 minutes from Queens Wharf or Princes Wharf to the Downtown Ferry Terminal. Take a Fullers360 ferry to Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke — 40 minutes each way, ferries run every 30-60 minutes. Buy combined Ferry + Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus tickets at the terminal.
  • 2
If your ship tenders to Waiheke (expedition/boutique ships)Tenders drop off at Matiatia Wharf. From there the island is on your doorstep — the Explorer Bus and e-bike rentals are right at the pier.
  • 3
Getting around the islandThe Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus hits all major vineyards, beaches, and Oneroa Village. E-bikes (available at Matiatia) are popular given the hilly terrain. Taxis are scarce — don't rely on them for ferry returns.
  • 4
Allow buffer timeIf sailing from Auckland, build in at least a 2-hour buffer before departure. Aim for the 3:00-3:30 PM ferry back if your ship leaves at 6 PM. Missing the last ferry means missing your ship.

💡 Pro move: New Zealand biosecurity is strict — do not bring fresh fruit, vegetables, or meat off the ship. Sniffer dogs operate at terminals and fines start at NZD 400.

Insider Tips

  • Miss the last ferry, miss your ship. If your cruise departs Auckland at 6 PM, catch the 3:00-3:30 PM ferry from Matiatia. Ferries run every 30-60 min but can fill up — don't cut it close.
  • 🍷
Book vineyard lunches 2-3 months ahead for visits between December and March. Mudbrick, Tantalus, and The Oyster Inn fill up fast on cruise days.
  • 🚌
Get the Explorer Bus pass at the terminal. The hop-on hop-off bus meets every ferry and reaches vineyards and beaches that are too far to walk. Buy a combined ferry + bus ticket in Auckland for simplicity.
  • ☀️
New Zealand UV is extreme. Even on overcast days you can burn in under 15 minutes. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses — do not rely on buying them on the island.
  • 🐕
No food off the ship. NZ biosecurity sniffer dogs operate at ferry terminals. Don't bring fruit, vegetables, meat, or plant material from the ship — fines start at NZD 400 on the spot.
