Insider Tips

  • 🚢
Book Waiheke early: The ferry to Waiheke runs every 30 min from the Downtown Ferry Terminal (5 min walk from Queens Wharf). In peak season the 9-10am departures fill up — buy Fullers360 tickets online ahead of time.
  • 💵
Currency is NZD: Cards are accepted almost everywhere. ATMs are at Britomart and on Queen Street. The exchange rate matters — NZD ~0.60 USD. Skip the wharf money changers.
  • 🌦️
Four seasons in one day: Auckland weather is famously changeable. Pack a light waterproof layer even on sunny mornings — afternoon squalls are common October–April.
  • Hobbiton takes the whole day: If you're on a 12+ hour call, Hobbiton is doable; under 10 hours, prioritise Waiheke or Rangitoto instead. Missing the ship is not an option — plan buffer time.
  • 🥝
Eat local: The Wynyard Quarter and Britomart precinct have excellent New Zealand seafood — green-lipped mussels and whitebait fritters are the standouts. The Fish Market at Wynyard is walkable from the pier.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, BoltUber is widely available across Auckland. Bolt launched in Auckland in June 2025 and offers competitive rates. Neither Lyft nor Grab operate here.

🚍 Auckland Explorer Bus

Departs every 30 minutes from Princes Wharf and Queens Wharf, right at the cruise terminals. Covers major city attractions.

🚶 Walk

Free

Queens Wharf and Princes Wharf are in the heart of downtown Auckland. Most city-centre attractions, shops, and restaurants are within easy walking distance — no transport needed for the central area.

🚌 Public Bus

~NZD $5.50

AT Metro buses stop right at the terminal (bus stop 7300, Ferry Terminal). A single fare is around NZD $5.50 — good value for reaching suburbs or further attractions.

🚕 Taxi

NZD $10–$20

Taxis are available at the wharf. Given the port is essentially in the city centre, fares to most central hotels and attractions are very short and inexpensive.

📱 Rideshare (Uber / Bolt)

NZD $10–$25

Both Uber and Bolt operate in Auckland. Request from the wharf area — useful for reaching destinations beyond the walkable city centre.
