Insider Tips

  • 🚆
Train to Santiago is the best DIY move. Vilagarcía station is a 15-min walk from the pier. Buy Renfe tickets on the app in advance — trains run frequently and it's just 20–30 min each way. Absolutely worth it.
  • 🐚
Order the almejas a la marinera. Carril clams are the local obsession — steam-cooked in wine and garlic. Eat them in Carril itself or at any restaurant on the pedestrian Rúa de Baldosa in town.
  • Pack a light rain layer. Galicia is 'Green Spain' for a reason — short showers can blow through even in summer. A packable jacket and comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones are essential.
  • 🍷
Try Albariño with everything. This crisp, aromatic white wine is produced just up the road. It's inexpensive locally and perfect with the local seafood. Order it by the glass — you won't regret it.
  • 🕑
Mind the siesta. Most local shops close 1:30–4:30 PM. Restaurants actually welcome lunch from 2–4 PM — that's the local rhythm. Plan shopping before 1:30 PM or after 5 PM.
