Getting Ashore

Getting Ashore in Ferrol

  • 1
Arrive at Curuxeiras DocksShips berth bow-in at Pier 1 (large ships) or Pier 2 (medium ships). The Ferrol Vello waterfront is immediately outside the gate — no shuttle needed.
  • 2
Walk to Barrio de la MagdalenaHead uphill about 10 minutes along Rúa Real or the waterfront promenade to reach the Magdalena neighbourhood's neoclassical grid.
  • 3
Hire a taxi or join a tour for day tripsSantiago de Compostela is about 95 km / 1 hr 10 min by road; A Coruña about 50 km / 45 min. Taxis queue at the port gate. Ship excursions are easiest for Santiago — public transport is too infrequent to guarantee ship return times.

💡 Pro move: Watch from the top deck as you enter — the ship threads the narrows of the Ría de Ferrol flanked by Castillo de San Felipe and Castillo de la Palma, set roughly 600 m apart. Don't miss it.

Insider Tips

  • Watch the channel entry from the top deck — the ship threads a narrow strait with two historic castles (San Felipe and La Palma) guarding either bank. It's one of the most dramatic port entrances in Europe.
  • 🚌
Book Santiago through the ship or a private taxi — public transport (bus/train) connections are too unreliable to guarantee returning before all-aboard.
  • 🍽️
Galician siesta is real — shops in the Magdalena close roughly 1:30–4:30 PM. Tapas bars and restaurants stay open for lunch until ~3:30 PM.
  • 🐙
Eat pulpo — Galicia is the spiritual home of pulpo a la gallega (boiled octopus with paprika, olive oil, and coarse salt). Rúa Pardo Bajo and Rúa Magdalena have the best tapas bars.
  • 🌧️
Pack a layer and a light waterproof — Galicia is called "Green Spain" for a reason. Even in summer, brief Atlantic showers are common.
