Getting Ashore

Most cruise ships dock directly at the Varna East Passenger Terminal; a handful of smaller vessels or peak-season calls may tender.

Getting Into Varna

  • 1
From the pierThe terminal is at the northeast edge of the harbor, roughly 1 km from the city center. The Sea Garden (Morska Gradina) park begins almost immediately outside the gate — walk through it to reach the beach and central districts.
  • 2
On footRoman Baths: 10 min (800 m). Pedestrian zone (Knyaz Boris I Blvd): 15 min. Cathedral of the Assumption: 20-25 min. Archaeological Museum: 20 min.
  • 3
TaxiUse yellow metered taxis only; Triumf Taxi is reputable. Port to city center should be 5-8 BGN (~$3-5). Avoid unmarked taxis at the port gate.
  • 4
If tendering (NCL)Tenders run to the central quay; check the app or ship's daily program for tender schedule and last return time.

💡 Pro move: Bulgaria's head-nod convention is reversed — side-to-side means YES, up-and-down means NO. Locals near tourist areas sometimes adapt, which makes it more confusing.

Insider Tips

  • 💱
Use BGN, not euros. Bulgaria is in the EU but not the eurozone. ATMs in the city center dispense Bulgarian Lev. Cards are accepted widely, but carry some cash for beach chairs, public WCs, and market stalls.
  • 🚕
Stick to yellow metered taxis. Triumf Taxi is reliable. Port to center: 5-8 BGN. Golden Sands: ~25 BGN. Always check the rate card on the window before you get in — avoid touts at the port gate.
  • 🏛️
Book the Archaeological Museum first. The Gold of Varna collection is world-class and admission is under $6. Go early before tour groups arrive. It closes at 17:00.
  • 🏖️
City beach is steps from the pier. Varna Beach starts at the bottom of the Sea Garden — perfect for a swim without a taxi. Sunbeds and beach bars available; water is calm and warm July-August.
  • 🌡️
Summer calls are hot. July-August temperatures reach 30°C. The Sea Garden provides shade, but carry water and sunscreen — the walk to the Cathedral has open stretches.
