Insider Tips

  • 💱
Carry some euro (EUR) cash. Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026, replacing the lev. Cards are accepted in restaurants and museums, but small stalls, public toilets, and the local bus often want cash. ATMs are plentiful in the Old Town.
  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. The Old Town's cobblestones are ancient and uneven — sandals and heels are a bad idea.
  • 🤝
Watch out for the nod trap. Bulgarians traditionally shake their head for "yes" and nod for "no" — the opposite of most countries. Tourist-facing staff often adjust, but it still catches people off guard.
  • 🌹
Best souvenir: rose oil. Bulgaria produces a large share of the world's damask rose oil. The Old Town is full of rose-based soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes — genuine and good value.
  • 🚤
Water taxi to Sunny Beach departs from the old port (~€5–8 each way). Bus 1 from the isthmus is even cheaper and runs every 15 minutes — handy if you want a few hours on Bulgaria's biggest resort beach.
