Old Vaasa Ruins

Seven kilometres southeast of the modern city lie the haunting ruins of the original Vaasa, destroyed by a great fire in 1852. The skeletal walls of St. Mary's Church and the Wasastjerna house — now a small museum — tell the story of the city's dramatic rebirth on a new site.

Culture

Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art

Housed in a handsome 19th-century customs warehouse right on the inner harbor, Kuntsi holds one of Finland's finest modern and contemporary art collections. The building alone — restored timber and brick on the waterfront — is worth the visit. A 10–15 minute walk from Market Square.

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Use the shuttle or bus: The pier-to-center distance is walkable but most passengers take the Line 13 bus or a cruise shuttle. Confirm shuttle times at the gangway.
  • 🌍
Book the archipelago tour early: Kvarken boat tours sell out. If your line doesn't offer it, book independently before sailing — operators in Vaasa run trips most summer days.
  • 💶
Cards accepted everywhere: Finland is nearly cashless. Euros work for markets, but a contactless card is all you need for most purchases.
  • 🗣️
Bilingual city: Vaasa is officially bilingual — street signs and menus appear in both Finnish and Swedish. English is widely spoken among locals.
  • ☀️
Midnight sun country: Summer calls mean very long daylight hours and warm, pleasant weather. Pack layers — sea breezes can be brisk even in June-July.
