Getting Ashore

Ships dock at a basic river pontoon on the southern edge of town — the port is functional but has no passenger terminal or tourist facilities.

Getting Into Town

  • 1
Taxi from the pierTaxis wait near the ferry terminal. Agree on a price in Romanian Lei before getting in — drivers rarely speak English or accept cards. The town center is about 4 km north.
  • 2
Ship shuttleMost cruise lines offer a complimentary or low-cost shuttle into the town center. Check your daily programme — it saves the taxi negotiation.
  • 3
Organized excursionsThe most popular option: join a ship-organized coach to Bucharest (~2-2.5 hrs each way) or Nikopol, Bulgaria (via the local ferry). Both fill up — book in advance.

💡 Pro move: The walk from pier to center is not recommended — a dusty industrial road with heavy truck traffic and no meaningful sidewalk.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash in Lei is essential. Small shops, taxi drivers, and market stalls rarely accept cards or euros. Withdraw Romanian Lei (RON) before arrival, or check if your ship offers an exchange.
  • 🚕
Agree on a taxi fare before you get in. Meters are rare here. A ride to the fortress ruins or cathedral should cost well under €5 — but confirm in advance.
  • 🌭
Try mici — Romania's beloved grilled skinless sausages, sold at terrace restaurants near the central park. Cheap, filling, and genuinely good with cold local beer.
  • 🐕
Stray dogs are common in provincial Romania. They're generally not aggressive, but don't pet or feed them.
  • 📅
Sunday dockings are very quiet. Many shops and some restaurants close. The cathedral and promenade remain accessible, but plan accordingly.
