Novae Roman Legionary Fortress

Some 4 km east of the pier lie the excavated ruins of Novae, a major Roman military base for the VIII Augusta and I Italica legions. Walk the exposed hospital, headquarters, and early Christian basilica foundations — one of the most significant Roman sites on the Bulgarian Danube.

History

Pametnitsite — 1877 Liberation Crossing Monument

A vast park on the Danube riverbank west of town marks the exact spot where Russian forces crossed in 1877 to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Sweeping river views and large stone monuments make this a moving stop.

Aleko Konstantinov House-Museum

Pier to Freedom Square & Holy Trinity Church

From the quay, head uphill along the main road to Freedom Square (Ploshtad Svoboda). Take in the Russian Liberators monument and the university facade, then continue one block to Holy Trinity Church — try spinning the entrance columns. Return downhill to the ship.

    The uphill walk is real. It's only 700 m but a continuous climb from the pier. Anyone with mobility concerns should take a taxi — fares are very cheap.
