Getting Ashore

Trondheim's cruise berths sit close to the city center — most ships dock at Turistskipskaia (Pir 1) just minutes from Nidaros Cathedral and Bakklandet. Larger vessels use the Ila quay west of center, a short taxi or city bus ride away.

Turistskipskaia (Pir 1) — central berthThe primary cruise quay near the city center, roughly 10–15 minutes on foot from Nidaros Cathedral and the Gamle Bybro. No shuttle needed — walk straight into the historic core.
  • 2
Ila Quay — larger shipsLarger cruise ships berth at Ila, about 2 km west of the city center. City bus lines 3 and 5 connect to the center in under 10 minutes, or a taxi takes about 5 minutes.

Getting around townTrondheim's center is compact and very walkable. Trams and city buses cover wider areas, and bike hire (including e-bikes) is popular — look for the famous Trampe bicycle lift up Brubakken hill.

💡 Pro move: Norway is nearly cashless — tap-to-pay works everywhere including trams and market stalls. Most museums are priced in NOK; the Nidaros Cathedral entrance fee is worth every øre.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Tap-to-pay everywhere. Norway is nearly cashless — your contactless card covers buses, museums, cafés, and even the Munkholmen ferry. Keep just a little NOK for small markets.
  • 🕰️
Nidaros Cathedral first thing. Cruise crowds thin out mid-afternoon, but the Cathedral is busiest then. Head there early to enjoy the interior without queues.
  • ⛴️
Check Munkholmen ferry times. Ferries to Munkholmen island run seasonally from Ravnkloa market — verify the last return time against your all-aboard carefully.
  • 🚲
Ride the Trampe. The world's first bicycle lift in Bakklandet is a quirky Trondheim icon — rent a city bike and experience the gentle uphill push yourself.
  • 🌧️
Pack a light rain layer. Trondheim gets year-round rainfall, often light drizzle. A packable waterproof jacket means you won't cut short your walk when the clouds roll in.
