Insider Tips

  • ☂️
Bring a rain jacket. Trabzon is one of Turkey's wettest cities — lush and green for a reason. Pack layers even if the forecast looks clear.
  • Book Sümela early or skip it. If you want the monastery, hire a driver at the port immediately. Traffic in the national park can be heavy; leave at least 4.5 hours before all-aboard.
  • 💵
Turkish Lira for small things. Cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops, but carry some TRY cash for taxis, dolmuş, tea gardens, and bazaar stalls.
  • 🧕
Cover up for mosques. Women need to cover hair, shoulders, and knees at the Hagia Sophia (functioning mosque) and other religious sites. Men should wear long pants. Coverings available at the entrance.
  • 🍽️
Eat like a local. Try kuymak (melted cheese and cornmeal fondue) and trabzon pidesi (boat-shaped flatbread with egg and local cheese). Cemilusta near Meydan Park and Tarihi Kalkanoğlu Pilavcısı are reliable spots.
