Getting Ashore

There is no pier — your ship anchors in the turquoise lagoon and tenders you directly to the sand.

Getting Ashore at Tobago Cays

  • 1
Anchor & tenderShips anchor west of Petit Rameau, outside the Horseshoe Reef. Crew tenders or Zodiac inflatables ferry passengers to designated landing beaches on Baradal or Petit Bateau.
  • 2
Pay the park feeMarine park rangers collect the entrance fee on-site — approximately $10 EC (around $4 USD) per person. Cruise excursion packages typically include this. Independent arrivals should carry small bills.
  • 3
Wade ashoreDepending on tides and landing spot, you may wade through knee-deep water. Water shoes are highly recommended. The walk from any landing point to main beaches and turtle areas is under 5 minutes.
  • 4
No facilitiesThere are no toilets, shops, or ATMs on any of the cays. Everything you need comes from or stays on the ship. Pack-in/pack-out rules are strictly enforced by park rangers.

💡 Pro move: Only small ships (<400 passengers) are permitted to anchor. If you're on a large ship calling at Bequia or Union Island, a catamaran excursion can bring you here for the day.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

No piers exist — all cruise visitors arrive by tender from ships anchored in the lagoon.

Insider Tips

  • 🌿
Reef-safe sunscreen only. Regular sunscreen is banned in the marine park — it damages the coral. Bring mineral-based (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sunscreen or a rash guard.
  • 💵
Cash only on the cays. No ATMs, no card readers. Bring USD or Eastern Caribbean dollars in small bills for the park fee (~$4 USD), water taxis, and beach BBQ vendors.
  • 🦞
Lobster is seasonal. SVG's spiny lobster season is closed May 1 – August 31. If you visit in summer, beach BBQs still offer fresh fish, chicken, and conch.
  • 👟
Wear water shoes. Tender landings often involve wading through shallow water onto rocky or coralline shores. Flip-flops are fine on the sand but reef booties are ideal.
  • 🐢
Don't touch the turtles. Park rangers patrol the turtle sanctuary strictly. Touching, chasing, or feeding sea turtles carries heavy on-the-spot fines. Observe from 10+ feet.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

⚓ Ship Tender

Included

Cruise ships anchor in the lagoon and ferry passengers to shore via ship tender boats. No pier exists — this is the only way ashore.

🚤 Water Taxi (shared)

$30–$50 USD per person round-trip

Shared water taxis run from nearby Union Island and Mayreau to the Cays. A useful option for independent travelers or extended island-hopping.

🛥️ Private Boat Charter

$150–$600+ USD per trip

Private speedboat or sailboat charters from Union Island offer flexible itineraries. Costs depend on boat size and group; typically include snorkel gear and park fees.

🎟️ Marine Park Entrance Fee

$10–$15 USD per person

All visitors must pay a marine park entrance fee on arrival at the Cays. Some organized day tours include this fee in the total price; confirm when booking.
