Insider Tips

  • 🚗
Book transport in advance. There are no taxis or buses on Tinian. If you want to see North Field or any site outside San Jose, arrange a rental car or guided tour before your call day — options are limited and book out.
  • 🌶️
Take home Tinian hot peppers. The tiny donni sali pepper is famous across Micronesia. A jar of local Tinian hot pepper paste is the quintessential souvenir and costs just a few dollars at local stores.
  • 💵
Cash is essential. USD is the currency. Small vendors, food stalls, and beach operators run cash-only. The nearest ATM is in San Jose village — bring some from the ship just in case.
  • 🌞
Shade is scarce at WWII sites. North Field is open, flat, and exposed. Bring a hat, plenty of water, and reef-safe sunscreen — regular sunscreen is restricted in many Micronesian waters.
  • 🏺
Don't remove historical artifacts. Taking WWII shell casings, shrapnel, or star sand from beaches is illegal. Leave everything in place.
