Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in Port Resolution Bay; all passengers tender ashore to a rustic jetty or beach.

Getting Ashore at Tanna Island

  • 1
Anchor & tenderCruise ships anchor in sheltered Port Resolution Bay on Tanna's east coast. Tenders (zodiacs or ship's boats) ferry passengers to a basic jetty or directly onto the beach — there is no cruise terminal.
  • 2
Book excursions in advanceThere are no taxis or tour desks ashore. To reach Mount Yasur, kastom villages, or the Giant Banyan Tree, you need a pre-arranged 4WD vehicle. Book through your cruise line or a vetted local operator before disembarking.
  • 3
Independent exploration near portPort Resolution village, the nearby beach, and the hot springs are walkable from the tender landing — no vehicle needed for these. Beyond that, rough volcanic tracks make independent travel risky.

💡 Pro move: Roads on Tanna are unsealed volcanic tracks, often deeply rutted. If an independent vehicle breaks down mid-excursion, you could miss your ship. Ship-sanctioned tours are strongly recommended.

Tanna's bucket-list draw is Mount Yasur, but ancient kastom villages and geothermal beaches round out a genuinely unforgettable shore day.

Adventure

Mount Yasur Volcano

Stand at the rim of one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes as it fires lava bombs skyward. A 4WD ride across the ash plain leads to a short 10-minute climb to the crater edge — raw, loud, and unmissable.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring small-denomination AUD or USD cash. There are no ATMs near Port Resolution. Vanuatu Vatu (VUV) is official, but Australian dollars are widely accepted by local vendors. Change may come in Vatu.
  • 👟
Wear closed-toe shoes and bring a face buff. Volcanic ash at Mount Yasur gets into everything — good footwear is essential. A bandana or buff to cover nose and mouth when the ash blows toward you is invaluable.
  • 🚗
Book tours through your ship for safety. Tanna's roads are rough 4WD tracks with no phone signal in remote areas. If an independent vehicle breaks down, you risk missing the ship. Ship-organised tours are worth the premium here.
  • 👘
Dress modestly for village visits. Cover shoulders and knees when entering kastom villages — it's a sign of respect for communities that take their traditions seriously. Do not photograph villagers without explicit permission.
  • 🎒
Bring school supplies, not sweets. Locals appreciate donations of notebooks, pens, and basic medical supplies (band-aids, antiseptic). Hand items to the village chief or school teacher, not directly to children.
