Getting Ashore

Ships dock at an industrial pier in Wuqi District — the port is not walkable to attractions, so all passengers need transport.

Getting Out of the Port

  • 1
Pier locationCruise ships berth at the Port of Taichung Passenger Terminal, Wuqi District. A passenger terminal building with ATMs and basic facilities is at the dock. Wharves 23 & 24 handle cruise vessels.
  • 2
Industrial port — transport is requiredWalking through the port's container zone is not permitted. Exit via the cruise line's shuttle bus, a tour bus, or taxi. Do not attempt to walk along port roads — heavy traffic and strong coastal winds make it unpleasant and unsafe.
  • 3
TaxisTaxis queue outside the terminal gate. City center costs approximately NT$800–NT$1,000 (~US$25–32) each way, 45–60 minutes. Gaomei Wetlands runs about NT$200–250 (~US$7). Agree on the fare or insist on the meter before departure.
  • 4
Public busBus #310 from near the Mitsui Outlet Park (5-min taxi from pier) runs to Taichung Main Station for about NT$50 (~US$1.50). Journey takes 75–90 minutes. Buy an EasyCard at any 7-Eleven or FamilyMart inside the terminal area.

💡 Pro move: The port area is notoriously windy — secure hats and bring a light windbreaker even on warm days.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash is essential. ATMs are available inside the passenger terminal — withdraw NT$ before heading out. Most taxis, street food vendors, and traditional market stalls are cash-only. Mitsui Outlet Park and chain restaurants accept cards.
  • 🗣️
Bring your destination in Chinese. Few taxi drivers speak English. Screenshot or print your destinations in Traditional Chinese, or use Google Maps offline with the Chinese name ready to show the driver.
  • 💨
The port is very windy. Wuqi District faces the Taiwan Strait and is notorious for strong gusts. Pack a windbreaker and secure loose items — this applies even on warm, sunny days.
  • 🚕
Budget NT$800–1,000 each way to the city. Always agree on a price or confirm the meter is running before departure. Shared taxis with fellow passengers are common and cut costs.
  • 🧋
Try a sun cake (taiyang bing). These flaky, maltose-filled pastries are Taichung's signature edible souvenir. Buy a boxed set at Miyahara or any traditional bakery in the city centre — they travel well.
