Insider Tips

  • 💳
Go cashless: Poland is nearly 100% card-based — Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay work everywhere, including taxis, ferries, and market stalls. No need to exchange currency.
  • 🇩🇪
Walk into Germany: The Polish-German border is unmarked — no passport control. The coastal path to Ahlbeck (Germany) is flat, paved, and a highlight for most visitors. Budget 2-3 hours for a return walk or 1-1.5 hours by bike.
  • ⛴️
Free Bielik ferry: If your ship docks on the Wolin side, the pedestrian ferry to Usedom (Usedomer side) is free, runs every 20 minutes, and takes about 10 minutes — don't pay taxi prices to use the tunnel for a short hop.
  • 🐟
Eat smoked fish: Look for a local wędzarnia (smokehouse) near the market or port — smoked Baltic cod, mackerel, or halibut wrapped in paper is the authentic local snack, usually under 20 PLN.
  • 🏰
Fort Gerhard books up: Guided tours of Fort Gerhard (the Prussian fort on Wolin) have limited slots. Book online in advance or arrive early — the guides in Prussian uniforms make it worth the effort.
