Halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is where polar bears outnumber people and glaciers tumble into fjords of impossible blue. This is expedition cruising at its most raw.
Longyearbyen has two disembarkation options depending on ship size; expedition anchorages elsewhere use Zodiacs.
💡 Pro move: During peak season (June–August) multiple ships may be in port simultaneously; expect some tender queuing.
Longyearbyen has dedicated cruise infrastructure; remote expedition anchorages throughout the archipelago use Zodiacs.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Large cruise ships (Norwegian Star, MSC, etc.) | Bykaia Cruise Quay, ~1.5 km from town center📍 | Docked |
| Smaller ships / when Bykaia is full | Tenderkaia (central tender pier, near Tourist Info)📍 | Tendered |
| Expedition ships (Hurtigruten, Lindblad, Ponant) | Remote fjord anchorages — Ny-Ålesund, Pyramiden, Magdalenefjord, etc.📍 | Tendered |
Svalbard's excursions are defined by wilderness — glacier boat tours, polar bear safaris, abandoned Soviet ghost towns, and guided Arctic hikes.
Board a small expedition vessel or RIB to patrol fjords and coastline for polar bears, walruses, reindeer, and Arctic foxes. Summer sea ice retreat is prime season. Belugas, fin whales, and humpbacks also frequent these waters.
Find Svalbard wildlife tours →Cruise deep into Billefjorden or Ymerbukta to drift in front of towering tidewater glacier walls. Watch for calving events and deep-blue ice. Zodiacs or catamarans get you within safe viewing distance (200m min).
Find glacier boat tours →Boat trip to the abandoned Soviet coal-mining settlement, abruptly evacuated in 1998 and left frozen in time. Tour the crumbling cultural center, see the northernmost Lenin statue, and photograph the ghostly apartment blocks. Views of Nordenskiöldbreen en route.
Find Pyramiden tours →All wilderness hikes require an armed guide. Platåfjellet is a steep climb rewarded with panoramic views of Longyearbyen and Adventfjorden. Sarkofagen leads between two glaciers over moraine terrain — look for plant fossils in the loose rock.
Find guided Arctic hikes →Two excellent museums walkable from the pier. The Svalbard Museum covers the archipelago's natural history, whaling era, and polar ecosystems. The North Pole Expedition Museum tells the gripping stories of Amundsen, Nobile, and Andrée's airship attempts to reach the Pole.
Plan your Longyearbyen visit →Strap on a headlamp and miner's gear and crawl into a historically preserved coal mine just outside town. This is Longyearbyen's industrial past made tangible — led by knowledgeable local guides. Must be pre-booked.
Book Coal Mine No. 3 tour →Independent walking is limited to Longyearbyen's safe zone; all routes outside of town require an armed guide.
Walk from the cruise pier along the fjord road into town. Pass the coal trestles and colourful wooden buildings before reaching Gågata, the main pedestrian street with shops, cafes, and the Tourist Info centre. Flat the entire way; can be very windy.
🗺️ See full route in Maps →From Gågata, walk up to the Svalbard Science Centre (housing the Svalbard Museum), continue to the North Pole Expedition Museum, then up to Svalbard Kirke (church) for fjord views and free coffee. Loop back through the town center. All within the polar bear safe zone.
