Getting Ashore

Longyearbyen has two disembarkation options depending on ship size; expedition anchorages elsewhere use Zodiacs.

Getting Ashore in Svalbard

  • 1
Bykaia Cruise PierLarger cruise ships dock at Bykaia, about 1.5 km southwest of town. Walk takes 20–25 minutes along a flat paved path; many ships run shuttle buses. A SeaWalk passenger gangway is in place.
  • 2
Tenderkaia / Central PontoonWhen Bykaia is full or the ship is smaller, you tender to Tenderkaia near the town center — about a 10-minute walk from the pedestrian street. Expedition ships also use Zodiacs to land at remote bays around the archipelago.
  • 3
Passport & EntrySvalbard is outside the Schengen Zone. Even if you boarded in mainland Norway, you will go through passport control. Keep your passport accessible.
  • 4
Outside Town: Guided OnlyPolar bears roam freely. Warning signs mark the 'safe zone' at town's edge — you CANNOT go past them without an armed guide. All wilderness hikes and remote landings are guided.

💡 Pro move: During peak season (June–August) multiple ships may be in port simultaneously; expect some tender queuing.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Longyearbyen has dedicated cruise infrastructure; remote expedition anchorages throughout the archipelago use Zodiacs.

Insider Tips

  • 🐻‍❄️
Never leave the safe zone alone. Polar bear warning signs mark the edge of town — going past them without an armed guide is illegal and genuinely dangerous. All wilderness excursions must be booked through licensed operators.
  • 💳
Svalbard is nearly cashless. Cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted everywhere — cafes, museums, souvenir shops. You don't need NOK cash; just bring your card.
  • 🛍️
Duty-free shopping is real here. Svalbard is outside the Schengen customs area — alcohol, tobacco, and outdoor gear are significantly cheaper than mainland Norway. Stock up at tax-free shops in town.
  • 🧥
Dress for Arctic conditions even in summer. Even June and July can see near-freezing temperatures with biting wind. Waterproof, windproof outer layers are essential — don't rely on ship-provided gear.
  • 🌞
24-hour daylight. The Midnight Sun means the sun never sets May–August. Bring a sleep mask for the cabin and don't forget strong sunscreen — UV intensity reflecting off ice and water is much higher than it feels.
