Getting Ashore

Longyearbyen has two pier facilities — Bykaia for larger ships and Tenderkaia for tender operations — both within walking distance of town.

Getting Ashore in Longyearbyen

  • 1
Docking at BykaiaLarger vessels berth at Bykaia pier, about 1.5 km from the town center. The walk is flat and straightforward; many cruise lines run a free shuttle bus.
  • 2
Tendering via TenderkaiaWhen Bykaia is full or the ship is too large, tenders land at the dedicated Tenderkaia. The walk into town is similar — about 15-20 minutes on level ground.
  • 3
Heading into townLongyearbyen's main street has shops, the Svalbard Museum, cafés, and outfitters. Most excursion operators meet at clearly signed points near the pier or in the town center.
  • 4
Outside town — go with a guidePolar bears roam freely beyond Longyearbyen's boundaries. Any excursion into the wilderness (legally required) must be led by a certified guide carrying a firearm.

💡 Pro move: The immediate pier area is a working cargo dock with minimal facilities. Head into town for services, ATMs, and meeting points.

Insider Tips

  • 🐻‍❄️
Never leave town without a guide. Polar bears are present year-round on Spitsbergen and are faster than they look. Any excursion beyond city limits legally requires a certified guide with a firearm.
  • 💳
Cards accepted everywhere in Longyearbyen — Norwegian Krone (NOK) is the currency but most shops and restaurants take Visa/Mastercard. ATMs are available in the town center.
  • ☀️
Midnight sun mid-May to late July. The sun never sets — pack an eye mask for sleeping and embrace the 24-hour photography light.
  • 🧊
Dress in layers even in summer. Temperatures average 3-7°C in July; wind and sea spray can make it feel much colder. Waterproof outer layers are essential on any boat excursion.
  • 🚢
Book Pyramiden and glacier boat trips early. Operator capacity is limited and these are the most popular excursions — they sell out well before the ship arrives.
