Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
Pack a rain layer. Suva is the wettest capital city in the Pacific — short downpours are common year-round. A compact umbrella or light poncho is a must.
  • 🥣
Try kava. Fiji's ceremonial drink is sold in the market and offered on village tours. It's earthy and mildly numbing — say 'bula!' and drink the whole bilo in one go.
  • 💵
Use FJD. Fijian Dollars are the local currency. ATMs are available in central Suva. USD is sometimes accepted in tourist spots but at poor rates — change money at the port or a bank.
  • 🚕
Negotiate taxis upfront. Taxis are cheap and plentiful but meters aren't always used. Agree on a fare before you get in, especially for longer trips like Colo-i-Suva or Pacific Harbour.
  • 👗
Cover up for villages and temples. If you join a village tour or enter a Hindu temple, cover shoulders and knees. Remove hats when entering a village — it's a sign of respect.
