Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Pack bug spray — it's essential. Salt marshes mean sandflies (no-see-ums) and mosquitoes on the island and along the waterfront. DEET or Picaridin-based repellent is a must, especially at dusk.
  • ⛴️
Book the Cumberland Island ferry before your cruise. The NPS ferry sells out weeks in advance, especially on weekends. Book at recreation.gov — your ship may also offer excursions but independent tickets are cheaper.
  • 🎒
Cumberland Island has zero services. No stores, restaurants, or trash cans on the island. Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen, and carry all your trash back to the ferry.
  • 🐴
Keep distance from the wild horses. They're beautiful but unpredictable. NPS rules require staying at least 50 feet away — and they mean it.
  • 🕐
Allow extra time for the ferry return. The last afternoon ferry departs at 4:45 PM (summer). Missing it means a very expensive water taxi back. Plan to catch the mid-afternoon ferry if you have a ship curfew.
