History

Ribat & Great Mosque

Climb the 8th-century ribat (fortified monastery) watchtower for sweeping views of the Medina, the Great Mosque, and your ship at anchor. The mosque — built in 851 AD without a minaret — is a rare architectural gem. Both are within the Medina walls.

Sousse Archaeological Museum

Housed in the hilltop Kasbah, this museum holds the world's second-largest collection of Roman mosaics (after Tunis's Bardo). The pieces — vivid gods, sea creatures, and mythological scenes — are extraordinarily well preserved.

Medina Souk Walk

The souks inside the Medina are divided by trade — spices, carpets, leather, metalwork. Haggling is expected; start at 30–40% of the asking price. The Medina's living streets (locals still live here) feel straight out of a film set — though the famous Indiana Jones "Cairo" scenes were actually shot in nearby Kairouan, an easy comparison.

⏱ 1–3 hrs🚶 Free to wander💰 Bring small TND notes🛍 Spices, carpets & leather

Insider Tips

  • 💱
Closed currency: Tunisian Dinars cannot be legally exported. Exchange only what you'll spend and reconvert any leftovers before boarding. Keep your receipts to reconvert.
  • 🚕
Taxis: negotiate first. Agree a price before you get in. To Port El Kantaoui expect ~10–15 TND one way. Back to port: same. Rideshare apps don't operate here.
  • 🎭
"Ship crew" scam: Strangers claiming the Medina is closed for prayers or festivals are directing you to a family shop. Ignore and keep walking — the Medina is virtually never closed.
  • 👗
Dress modestly in the Medina and at religious sites — shoulders and knees covered. Wraps are available at the Great Mosque entrance. Swimwear is fine at El Kantaoui resort beaches.
  • 🌶
Try brik: A crispy pastry filled with egg, tuna, and capers — Tunisia's iconic street snack. Also grab a mint tea with pine nuts at any Medina café. Very cheap, very good.
