Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in Soufrière Bay and run tender boats to the Soufrière Town Jetty — a short ride with Piton views the whole way.

Getting Ashore in Soufrière

  • 1
Collect your tender ticketPick up a tender ticket at guest services and board the ship's tender from the main gangway. Expect 10–15 minutes to reach the jetty.
  • 2
Arrive at Soufrière Town JettyThe jetty puts you steps from the town square, market, and water taxi operators. Taxis line up immediately outside.
  • 3
Arrange transportFor volcano, falls, or plantations, agree a round-trip price with a land taxi before you leave. For beaches (Sugar Beach, Anse Chastanet), take a water taxi — faster and more scenic than the rough mountain roads.
  • 4
Return with time to spareBe back at the jetty at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. Tender queues build up toward the end of the day.

💡 Pro move: Soufrière is a small-ship and expedition port — typically serving vessels from Windstar, Ponant, Seabourn, Emerald, and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Mega-ships dock in Castries and usually offer overland excursions to Soufrière instead.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Soufrière has no cruise pier — all ships anchor and tender to the waterfront jetty.

Top Excursions

Soufrière concentrates some of the Caribbean's best nature experiences within a 15-minute taxi ride of the jetty.

Nature

Sulphur Springs & Volcanic Mud Bath

The Caribbean's only drive-in volcano. Walk through bubbling sulfur pools, then slather yourself in warm mineral-rich mud, let it dry, and rinse off in the hot spring pools. Wear an old dark swimsuit — sulfur stains.

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths

Six lush acres of tropical gardens lead to the Diamond Waterfall, its rocks stained orange, yellow, and green by mineral deposits. Soak in the mineral baths — fed by hot springs that King Louis XVI commissioned for his troops in 1784.

Sugar Beach (Anse de Pitons) by Water Taxi

The beach between the Pitons. Take a water taxi from the jetty (10–15 min) to this iconic strip of pale volcanic sand and vivid blue water. Arrive by water — the land approach via the Viceroy resort is costly and steep.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
USD everywhere. The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) is local (~2.70 XCD per USD), but US dollars are universally accepted. Bring small bills — change is often given in XCD.
  • 🚤
Water taxi beats land taxi for beaches. The roads to Sugar Beach and Anse Chastanet are steep, potholed, and slow. A water taxi is faster, cooler, and scenic. Agree a round-trip price and a pickup time before you board.
  • 👕
Wear old, dark swimwear to the volcano. Volcanic sulfur mud stains light fabrics and can tarnish jewelry. Leave your white cover-up and good sandals on the ship.
  • 🤝
Expect persistent vendors at the jetty. Taxi drivers and guides will approach immediately. A polite, firm 'No thank you, we have plans' usually works — eye contact helps.
  • Leave an hour buffer for the tender. Return to the jetty at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. Tender lines can be long and waits unpredictable.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚢 Walk from tender jetty

Free

The tender jetty drops you directly in Soufrière town center. The market, restaurants, and main street are immediately accessible on foot — no transport needed.

🚕 Taxi

From ~XCD 15 (~$6 USD) flag fare; 4-hr private tour ~$100–150 USD per person

Taxis congregate near the jetty and town square. Fares are government-regulated but unmetered — always agree on a price before you go. Great for reaching the Pitons, Sulphur Springs, or Diamond Falls.

🚐 Public minibus

XCD 2.50–8 (~$1–3 USD)

Shared minibuses run between Soufrière and nearby villages. Very cheap but routes and schedules are informal — best for budget travelers comfortable with local transit.

⛵ Hop & Drop catamaran (from Castries)

~$80 USD adults, ~$45 USD children

If your ship docks in Castries, Sea Spray Cruises offers a catamaran transfer to Soufrière with ~2.5 hrs free time, a snorkel stop on return, and drinks included.

🧑‍✈️ Private guided tour

~$130–150 USD per person

Private drivers and tour operators (e.g., Island Taxi) offer full-day Soufrière packages covering the Pitons, volcano, botanical gardens, and a waterfall — transport and lunch often included.
