Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to the harborMost cruise ships anchor in the bay and run tenders to the small floating pier adjacent to the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. Expedition ships may dock directly at the fishing quay.
  • 2
On-island orientationThe entire main island is walkable. Turn right from the pier for the hotel and village; follow the road 10 min to reach the bridge with watches. Hillesøy Island is connected by a short pedestrian bridge.
  • 3
No shuttle neededAll main attractions, beaches, and the cafe are within a 15-minute walk of the tender landing. Wear layers — Arctic weather changes fast.

💡 Pro move: Sommarøy is primarily a shore excursion destination from Tromsø; direct cruise calls are made mainly by expedition lines (Hurtigruten, Havila, Ponant, Seabourn, Silversea).

Insider Tips

  • 🧥
Layer up. Arctic weather is wildly changeable — bright sun can flip to 8°C wind and rain in minutes. Pack a waterproof outer layer and warm hat even in summer.
  • 💳
Norway is cashless. You can tap a card for a single cup of coffee or a postcard. No need to carry Norwegian krone.
  • Leave your watch on the bridge. The Sommarøy Bridge railing is covered in wristwatches left by visitors embracing the island's famous 'time-free zone' concept — bring one to add your own.
  • ☀️
Midnight Sun: May 18 – Jul 26. The sun stays above the horizon continuously. If your call is during this window, it's still light at midnight — genuinely eerie and beautiful.
  • 🚻
Restrooms are scarce. Use facilities on the ship before tendering. The Sommarøy Arctic Hotel has restrooms for paying guests; the Kafe & Landhandel (local cafe) may also have access.
