Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the industrial DP World Sokhna container port — walking is prohibited inside the port area, so all passengers must use an organized transfer or shuttle bus to reach the gate.

Getting Ashore at Ain Sokhna

  • 1
Board excursion buses at the shipShip-sponsored and independent tour buses load directly alongside the vessel. This is the most common way for passengers to move through the port.
  • 2
Take the port shuttle to the gateIf not on a tour, use the port's free or low-cost shuttle bus to reach the main exit gate, where taxis and private drivers wait.
  • 3
Arrange taxis at the gateTaxis are available at the port gate. Negotiate the rate upfront — a full-day private car to Cairo and back costs around USD 100–150. Ensure your driver agrees to wait and return you on time.
  • 4
Independent Cairo tipCairo traffic is unpredictable. Build in extra buffer time. If your ship leaves at 6 PM, plan to depart Cairo by 3 PM at the latest.

💡 Pro move: For Cairo excursions, strongly consider a ship-sponsored tour — if you're delayed independently, the ship will not wait. The port depth (19 m) accommodates even the largest megaliners.

Insider Tips

  • 🏛️
Book Cairo tours through your ship. Egypt traffic is notoriously unpredictable — if your private driver is delayed and you miss the ship, that's on you. Ship-sponsored tours guarantee you won't be left behind.
  • 💵
USD and EUR are king here. Most taxi drivers, tour operators, and resort day-pass desks accept dollars and euros. Keep small bills — change is often scarce. The Egyptian Pound (EGP) gets you further at local shops.
  • 👕
Pack two outfits. Swimwear and shorts are fine at resorts and beaches. If you're heading to Cairo, monasteries, or mosques, cover shoulders and knees — both men and women.
  • 🌡️
Summer is brutal. May–September temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F). Carry water, sunscreen, and a hat. The cable car and museum visits are air-conditioned; the Pyramids are not.
  • 🚕
Haggle for taxis. Taxis at the port gate will quote inflated prices to tourists. Counter at around 50% of their opening number. For a full-day car to Cairo and back, expect USD 100–150 if you negotiate well.
