The only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World awaits. Cruise itineraries labeled 'Cairo' dock at Port Said or Ain Sokhna — both require a dedicated shore day to reach the Pyramids, but few destinations on earth deliver a bigger payoff.

Ships dock at Port Said or Ain Sokhna — Cairo and the Pyramids are a dedicated drive away, so the entire day must be committed to the excursion.
Getting to Cairo from Your Ship
1
From Port Said (Mediterranean)Ships dock at Port Said Cruise Terminal in the city center. Cairo is ~200 km away, a 3–4 hr bus ride each way. Police-escorted convoys are common for tourist groups. Ship excursions and pre-booked private tours manage this logistics.
2
From Ain Sokhna (Red Sea)Ain Sokhna Port is ~130 km from Cairo, about 90 min–2 hrs by road — the closest cruise port to the Pyramids. Ship-organized and private tours pick up directly at the pier.
3
Book in advanceShip-organized shore excursions guarantee return before departure. Independent tours from reputable operators (e.g., Cairo Top Tours, Egypt Tours Portal) are cheaper but verify they monitor ship schedules.
4
Entry & paymentGiza Plateau tickets purchased on arrival; Egyptian Pounds or USD accepted. The Grand Egyptian Museum requires a separate entrance ticket. Carry small bills for tips.
💡 Pro move: Do NOT attempt Cairo independently without a pre-arranged transfer — the distances and logistics make it impractical, and missing the ship is a real risk.
Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line
Cairo port calls use either Port Said on the Mediterranean or Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea, depending on the itinerary.
Nearly every shore excursion from 'Cairo' port calls revolves around the Giza Plateau — the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World — with optional add-ons in the city.
Iconic
Pyramids of Giza & Great Sphinx
The three great pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinus plus the iconic Great Sphinx dominate the plateau just outside Cairo. Walk the causeway, enter a pyramid (extra fee), and take in the scale that no photo prepares you for.
⏱ 3-4 hrs on site🚶 Moderate (sandy terrain)📷 Essential
Opened in 2025, the GEM sits at the edge of the Giza Plateau and holds the complete Tutankhamun collection — over 5,000 artifacts — plus massive royal statues. Combining with Pyramids is easy given its location.
Egypt's oldest large-scale stone monument, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara is 4,700 years old and surrounded by tombs with vivid painted reliefs. About 30 km south of Giza — add to a Pyramids day if time permits.
Cairo's 14th-century bazaar is a labyrinth of spice stalls, jewelry, textiles, and street food in the heart of Islamic Cairo. Nearby, the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali offer stunning skyline views.
The Hanging Church, Cavern Church of Abu Serga, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue are clustered in this ancient enclave on the site of the Roman fortress of Babylon. A peaceful contrast to the bustle of the Pyramids.
If your port call allows an evening ashore, a traditional felucca sailboat glide on the Nile or a dinner cruise with live music provides a very different side of Cairo from the pyramid rush.
Cairo proper is not walkable from the pier — the 'walks' below are self-guided strolls within the sites themselves, once you arrive by tour or taxi.
Giza Plateau Self-Guided Loop
2-3 km · 1-2 hrs · Flat sandy plateau
From the main entrance, walk the road past the Great Pyramid of Cheops south to Chephren and Mykerinus, then double back to the Sphinx enclosure and Valley Temple. The route is well-signposted and manageable without a guide — though guides add historical context.
Enter from Al-Hussein Mosque square and zigzag through the covered lanes of the bazaar toward El-Fishawi Café, one of Cairo's oldest coffeehouses. Exit toward Al-Azhar Street for a look at Al-Azhar Mosque.

Insider Tips
⏰
Commit the full day. From Port Said, Cairo is 6-8 hrs of driving round-trip. From Ain Sokhna it's 3-4 hrs. Either way, you will see nothing if you leave the ship late — board the earliest available tour.
💵
Carry Egyptian Pounds and USD. Site tickets are often priced in EGP; tipping guides, drivers, and photo vendors is expected and USD/EUR accepted. Bring small bills.
🌡️
Dress for extreme heat. Giza has zero shade. Lightweight long sleeves (sun + modesty at mosques), a hat, and 2+ liters of water are essential May–September. October–March is far more comfortable.
📸
No photography inside the pyramids — it's prohibited and enforced. Outside shooting is unlimited. Camel and horse handlers will approach aggressively; agree on price before getting on or decline firmly.
🚌
Ship tours vs. private guides. Ship excursions guarantee return before departure. Reputable private operators (booked in advance) offer a better ratio at lower cost — but always confirm they monitor sailing times.
🏛️
Grand Egyptian Museum vs. old Egyptian Museum. The new GEM at Giza (2025) is the unmissable choice — it has the full Tutankhamun collection. The old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is far from Giza and takes extra travel time.
Getting Around
Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.
🚗 Ride-share: ✅ Uber, Careem, BoltUber and Careem are the most reliable options within Cairo. Bolt launched in March 2024 but coverage is more limited.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus
🚐 Private Transfer (Port Said → Cairo)
USD 80–150 per vehicle
Most cruise ships dock at Port Said, about 2 hours from Cairo. Pre-booked private transfers are the standard option and offer a fixed all-in price per vehicle.
🚌 Shore Excursion / Guided Day Tour
USD 150–300 per person
Ship-organized or third-party guided tours to the Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, and Old Cairo are the most popular choice. Entrance fees and lunch are often included.
🚗 Rideshare (Uber / Careem)
EGP 100–300 within Cairo (~$2–6 USD)
Uber and Careem work well for getting around Cairo itself. Not practical for the Port Said–Cairo leg, but very convenient once you arrive in the city.
🚖 Local Taxi
EGP 100–200 (~$2–4 USD) within Cairo
Metered taxis are widely available in Cairo. Agree on a fare in advance for unmetered cabs; apps like Uber or Careem can be cleaner for pricing transparency.
🚇 Cairo Metro
EGP 7–10 (~$0.15–0.20 USD)
Cairo has a functioning metro system — cheap and air-conditioned. Useful for getting between major districts once you are already in the city center.
