Getting Ashore

Cruise ships call at Linaria, the island's main port on the west coast — a pleasant fishing village with cafés, car rentals, and the sandy Acherounes beach nearby.

Getting Ashore at Linaria

  • 1
Pier or tender at LinariaSmaller cruise ships typically berth directly at Linaria's pier. Larger vessels may anchor offshore and run tender boats. Confirm with your ship the morning of arrival.
  • 2
Getting to Skyros Town (Chora)Chora is 12 km from Linaria. A public bus coordinates with ferry and cruise arrivals — check the posted schedule at the port. Taxis are available but scarce (fewer than 10 on the island); grab one immediately if you see it. Car and scooter rentals are available at the port for the most flexibility.
  • 3
On foot in LinariaLinaria itself has a nice waterfront, seafood tavernas, a supermarket, and the Acherounes beach a short walk north. If your ship is in port for only a few hours, exploring Linaria plus a beach swim is a low-stress option.

💡 Pro move: Skyros sees relatively few cruise calls and infrastructure is minimal. The island deliberately limits mass tourism development — that's part of its charm.

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Bus at the pier: A public bus typically meets ferries and cruise ships at Linaria for the 12 km ride to Chora. Check the schedule posted at the port as soon as you land — return times are limited.
  • 🚗
Rent a car or scooter: The best way to see the whole island. Several rental agencies operate at Linaria port. Book early in the day as supply is limited.
  • 🦞
Eat lobster pasta: Skyros is famous for astakomakaronada — fresh lobster pasta that's surprisingly affordable compared to other Greek islands. Tavernas at Linaria harbor serve it; so do restaurants in Chora and Magazia.
  • 👟
Wear real shoes in Chora: The cobblestones are beautiful but steep and polished smooth. Flip-flops are a fall risk. Save sandals for the beach.
  • 🏛️
Don't skip the Faltaits Museum: Small entry fee, huge payoff — one of Greece's best folk collections and a genuine window into Skyrian culture.
