One of the world's oldest ports and the gateway to the Greek capital. Whether you're chasing 2,500 years of history on the Acropolis or a lazy plate of grilled octopus at a harbourside taverna, a day in Piraeus delivers.
All ships dock at one of three purpose-built terminals within 500 m of each other. A free port shuttle connects terminals to the main gate at Terminal A.
💡 Pro move: Allow 30 minutes from cabin to port exit — Piraeus is a massive commercial port and the walk from ship to gate is longer than it looks on the map.
Piraeus has three modern docked cruise terminals; all ships berth alongside — tendering does not occur here.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most major cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Viking, P&O, Costa, MSC, NCL, HAL) | Terminal A (Miaoulis) — closest to port exit, has ATMs, café, duty-free, and taxi stand📍 | Docked |
| Overflow and large ships (MSC, Costa, Marella) | Terminal B (Themistocles) — modern facility, requires port shuttle to main gate📍 | Docked |
| Additional overflow (peak season) | Terminal C (Alkimos) — basic facilities, free port shuttle to Terminal A📍 | Docked |
Athens rewards those who plan ahead — book Acropolis tickets before you leave the ship, then choose between a deep city dive or a scenic coastal escape.
The non-negotiable. Climb to the Parthenon, then cool off in the award-winning Acropolis Museum with its glass floor over live excavations. Go early (pre-8 AM) or after 4 PM to beat the midday heat and crowds. Timed-entry tickets must be booked online in advance — the site does not sell walk-up tickets during peak season.
Find Athens Acropolis tours →If you've done the Acropolis before, this is the best alternative. A scenic 70 km drive along the Athenian Riviera ends at a dramatic 5th-century BC temple perched 60 m above the Aegean. Lord Byron carved his name in one of the columns. Sunset timing from the ship often lines up perfectly.
Find Cape Sounion tours →The Plaka neighbourhood wraps around the north slopes of the Acropolis in a tangle of whitewashed lanes, tavernas, and souvenir shops. Walk up into Anafiotika — a tiny Cycladic village hidden in the city. End at Monastiraki flea market and Syntagma Square to watch the Evzone guards change on the hour.
Find Athens walking tours →Dive into the Varvakios Central Market, sample feta, olives, honey, and loukoumades (Greek doughnuts), and eat souvlaki the way locals do — standing up at a counter in Psiri or Exarcheia, not at a tourist-trap in the Plaka.
Find Athens food tours →If Athens feels too hectic, stay in Piraeus. Mikrolimano is a crescent-shaped yacht harbour ringed with upscale seafood tavernas — perfect for a long Greek lunch. Zea Marina (Pasalimani) is 500 m away with superyachts, cafes, and the excellent, uncrowded Archaeological Museum of Piraeus nearby.
Find Piraeus local tours →The easiest low-effort way to cover Athens if you want flexibility without a guide. Multiple operators (red, yellow, blue buses) depart from outside the cruise terminals and cover the Acropolis, Parliament, Panathenaic Stadium, and the National Archaeological Museum with audio commentary.
Find Athens hop-on hop-off bus →Piraeus is walkable for the harbour and local waterfront; Athens is a metro or taxi ride away but very walkable once you're there.
From the cruise terminal gate, walk along Akti Miaouli past the main ferry terminal to Zea Marina (Pasalimani), then continue around to Mikrolimano harbour for coffee or seafood. Return along the coastal road.
