Top Excursions

Schwedt's biggest draw is nature: the national park, birdwatching, and cycling along the Oder — pair that with a stroll through the Baroque park remnants.

Nature

Lower Oder Valley National Park

Germany's only floodplain national park sprawls across the polders south of town. Solar-boat or canoe tours glide silently through reed channels past beavers, sea eagles, otters, and rare waterbirds. The Criewen visitor center has a great cold-water aquarium of native Oder fish.

Adventure

Oder-Neisse Cycle Path Ride

One of Germany's most famous long-distance bike trails runs right through the port. Rent a bike and pedal along the riverbank into the national park buffer zone or south toward Criewen — flat, scenic, and car-free.

⏱ 2–4 hrs🚲 Easy/moderate🌿 Scenic river route

History

Baroque Town Walk & Schlossgarten

The Margraves of Brandenburg-Schwedt left behind a grand park and the elegant Berliner Tor city gate, even as their palace was demolished by the GDR. Stroll Lindenallee to the gate, wander the castle park's ancient linden trees, and visit St. Catherine's Church.

⏱ 1.5–2 hrs🚶 Easy📜 Free to explore

Culture

Stadtmuseum Schwedt

A compact city museum inside a historic Huguenot-era house tracing Schwedt's story: Baroque splendor, WWII destruction, GDR industrial rebuild, and its fascinating role as Germany's tobacco capital in the 1700s.

Wildlife

Birdwatching in the Polders

The Oder floodplains are one of Europe's premier stopover sites for migratory birds — tens of thousands of cranes and wild swans pass through in autumn. Even in summer, white-tailed eagles, black storks, and corncrakes are regularly spotted from the dike paths.

Insider Tips

  • 💶
Carry cash. Smaller cafés, bakeries, and taxi drivers often prefer euros over cards. ATMs are available in the town center.
  • 🚲
Rent a bike if you can. The Oder-Neisse cycle path runs through the port — cycling into the national park buffer zone is the best way to experience the landscape.
  • 🦟
Pack insect repellent in summer. The surrounding floodplain wetlands breed mosquitoes, especially in the evening and near the reed beds.
  • 🏪
Sunday closures: If docking on a Sunday, all shops and supermarkets are closed by German law. Restaurants, cafés, and museums remain open.
  • 🗣️
Language tip: English is spoken in the town center, but older residents may speak Russian (East German era) rather than English. A translation app is handy.

Schwedt's old town and riverside promenade are accessible on foot from the central dock area. Most key sights are within 1–2 km of the pier.
