Getting Ashore

Sapelo Island has no cruise pier — the only public access is the Georgia DNR passenger ferry from Meridian (near Darien), a 20-minute crossing of Doboy Sound.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
State ferry from MeridianThe Georgia DNR ferry departs from the Sapelo Island Visitor Center on the mainland near Meridian/Darien. Advance reservations are mandatory — walk-up boarding is not allowed. State-guided tours run Wednesdays (8:30 AM–12:30 PM) and Saturdays (9 AM–1 PM). Cost: $15 adults, $10 children 6–12.
  • 2
Private and Gullah heritage toursLocal guides (including descendants in Hog Hammock) offer private excursions. Book well in advance — availability is limited and these fill quickly.
  • 3
On-island transportDistances are too far to walk. Tour buses meet state-tour groups at Marsh Landing Dock. Private golf carts can be reserved weeks ahead from Hog Hammock residents. The roads are mostly unpaved sand and shell.
  • 4
Mind the return ferryMiss the afternoon ferry and you are stranded — there are no taxis, rideshares, or last-minute accommodations. Arrive at Marsh Landing Dock at least 20 minutes before scheduled departure.

💡 Pro move: Sapelo is not a standard cruise port of call. Small-ship coastal lines (e.g. American Cruise Lines) occasionally include it; passengers are taken ashore by the ship's tender or via organized coach transfers to the mainland ferry.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There is no dedicated cruise pier on Sapelo Island — arrivals are by state ferry from the mainland or tender from anchored expedition vessels.

Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Bugs are brutal. No-see-ums, yellow flies, and mosquitoes are relentless from spring through fall. Pack DEET or Picaridin spray and wear lightweight long sleeves — this is not optional.
  • 💵
Cash only on the island. Cell service is spotty, card readers fail. Bring USD for tips, local Gullah crafts (sweetgrass baskets), and any snacks from the Hog Hammock store.
  • 🥪
No restaurants — pack food. The only dining option is Lulu's Kitchen in Hog Hammock (authentic Gullah cooking, by reservation only, days in advance). Everyone else should bring a packed lunch and plenty of water.
  • 📋
Reservations are mandatory. You cannot board the state ferry without a confirmed booking. Book state tours through the Georgia DNR Sapelo Visitor Center (912-437-3224) or arrange a private tour well in advance.
  • 🕐
Don't miss the return ferry. There are no taxis or rideshares on the island. Arrive at Marsh Landing Dock at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time.
