Insider Tips

  • 💳
No cash needed. Norway is almost entirely cashless — Visa/Mastercard is accepted at museums, cafes, market stalls, even buses. Leave the NOK notes at home.
  • 🐳
Whaling Museum is the highlight. Don't skip it even if you have limited time — it's genuinely world-class and only 5 minutes from the pier.
  • 🦐
Try fresh harbour shrimp. If fishing boats are docked at the guest pier, you can often buy shrimp directly off the boat — a classic Norwegian harbour experience.
  • 🚌
Gokstad Mound needs a bus or taxi. It's about 10 km outside town. Local VKT buses run from the Rutebilstasjon, or grab a taxi for ~200-300 NOK each way.
  • 🏪
Shops close Sundays. If your call is on a Sunday, expect retail to be mostly shut — but museums, restaurants, and the harbour remain lively.
