Insider Tips

  • ⛴️
Ferry over bus for the Amalfi Coast. The SS163 Amalfi Drive gets brutally congested — buses and coaches can sit for hours. The Travelmar ferry from Salerno is faster, cheaper than a tour, and gives you the best views.
  • 🕐
Afternoon siesta is real. Many shops, small churches, and family restaurants close 13:30–16:30. Plan cathedral and shopping visits for the morning.
  • 🚆
Train to Pompeii is easy and cheap. Salerno Centrale is about 25–30 minutes on foot from the pier (or €10 by taxi). Trains run frequently and cost around €3–4 each way.
  • 🧀
Eat the buffalo mozzarella. Salerno sits next to the Sele Plain, where the best mozzarella di bufala in Italy is made. Order it as an antipasto — it's incomparably fresh compared to anything exported.
  • 💶
Carry some cash. Small cafes, bus tickets, and the Minerva garden entry require cash. ATMs are available in the city center.
