Getting Ashore

All cruise ships tender to Marina Grande — there is no dedicated cruise pier on Capri.

Getting Ashore at Capri

  • 1
Tender to Marina GrandeShip tenders land at the Banchina del Porto quayside. Tender frequency depends on sea conditions — swell can delay or cancel operations entirely, especially in spring/autumn.
  • 2
Ride up to Capri TownThe funicular from Marina Grande takes 5 minutes and drops you at the Piazzetta. Buses and open-top taxis also run to Capri Town and onward to Anacapri.
  • 3
Plan return time carefullyLines for tenders back to the ship can be long in the afternoon. Aim to be back at Marina Grande at least 45 minutes before the ship's all-aboard time.

💡 Pro move: Large mainstream ships often dock in Naples and offer Capri by high-speed ferry as a shore excursion rather than anchoring at Capri itself.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Capri has no deep-water cruise berth — all ships anchor and tender passengers to Marina Grande.

Insider Tips

  • The grotto is a gamble: The Blue Grotto closes in even moderate swell. Check at Marina Grande kiosks before committing an hour of tender time to reach it.
  • Beat the queues: The funicular line at Marina Grande and the Piazzetta get overwhelming by 11 am in summer. Head up as soon as you land.
  • 🚌
Bus vs. funicular: The SIPPIC bus from Marina Grande to Anacapri (€2) is slower but skips the funicular crowds. Useful if you're heading straight to Anacapri or Villa San Michele.
  • 💶
Cash is useful: Rowboat operators at the Blue Grotto expect a €5 tip per person in cash. ATMs exist in Capri Town but queues form mid-morning.
  • 👟
Wear walking shoes: Cobblestone lanes and the Villa Jovis hike are rough. Flip-flops will make you miserable.
