Getting Ashore

How you land depends on your ship's size and the tide — Saint-Malo has up to 14m tidal range, one of Europe's largest.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Large ships: tender to Cale de la BourseShips over ~150m anchor offshore. Tenders run about 10 minutes to the Cale de la Bourse dock, just outside the city walls. Porte Saint-Vincent, the main gate to the walled city (Intra-Muros), is a flat 5-minute walk from the tender pier.
  • 2
Small ships: inner harbour berthsSmaller vessels (<150m) can transit the lock system into the Bassins or dock at the Gare Maritime du Naye ferry terminal. From the Gare Maritime it's a flat 15–20-minute walk along the waterfront to the walled city.
  • 3
Taxis and shuttle busesTaxis queue near both landing points. Some cruise lines offer a shuttle from the ferry terminal to the walled city gate. From Intra-Muros all major sights are on foot.

💡 Pro move: The port can handle up to four ships simultaneously (two berths, two anchorages). A new pedestrian bridge added in 2019 links directly to the passenger terminal.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Saint-Malo operates as a mixed pier/tender port — small ships dock inside the historic harbour while larger ocean liners anchor and tender ashore.

Insider Tips

  • 🌊
Respect the tides. Saint-Malo's tidal range reaches 14m — the paths to Grand Bé and Fort National flood at "the speed of a galloping horse." Check the posted tide table at the shore before crossing.
  • 👟
Wear flat, sturdy shoes. Cobblestones inside the walls are uneven and slippery when wet. Rampart steps are stone and can be narrow.
  • 🌦️
Layer up. Breton weather is notorious — rain, wind, and sunshine can all happen in an hour. Bring a windproof jacket even in summer.
  • 🥞
Eat on Rue de l'Orme. This street inside the walls is Saint-Malo's foodie hub — galetteries, oyster bars, cheese shops, and kouign-amann. Try a buckwheat galette complète and a salted caramel crêpe.
  • 🚕
Mont Saint-Michel logistics: Ship excursions are the easiest option. Independent travellers can book a private taxi or shared transfer from the tender dock — about €40–60 pp return depending on group size.
