Getting Ashore at Herm

  • 1
Direct tender or ferry from GuernseyExpedition ships tender straight to Herm Harbour. Passengers from Guernsey-calling ships take the Travel Trident ferry from St. Peter Port's Weighbridge Quay — runs hourly in season.
  • 2
Two landing points — ask which on returnAt high tide: Herm Harbour (shops and pub nearby). At low tide: Rosaire Steps on the south side (a 10-min uphill walk to the main paths). Tides shift through the day, so confirm your return departure point with ferry crew.
  • 3
No cars, no bikes — only walkingThe island is entirely car and bicycle-free. Paths are packed gravel/dirt. Sturdy shoes recommended; limited accessibility for wheelchairs, especially at Rosaire Steps.

💡 Pro move: Build in at least 2 hours before ship's all-aboard to allow for ferry back to Guernsey plus cruise tender — don't cut it close.

Shell Beach & Coastal Walk

Follow the main spine path north-east to Shell Beach, famous for millions of tiny shell fragments deposited by the Gulf Stream. The beach looks Caribbean at low tide — brilliant white and expansive. Continue along the coastal path to take in cliff views of Sark and, on clear days, France.

St. Tugual's Chapel & Herm Common

A tiny 11th-century Norman chapel in Manor Village near the island's centre, with stained-glass windows depicting local scenes and Guernsey cows — open daily for quiet reflection. Insider Tips

  • Allow 2 hours for the return journey. You need time for the Herm ferry back to Guernsey plus the cruise tender to your ship. Miss the last ferry and you miss the ship.
  • 🌊
Ask about tides. Landing at Herm Harbour or Rosaire Steps depends on the tide — confirm with ferry crew which landing point the return service uses before you head off exploring.
  • 💷
Currency is British Pounds (GBP). Guernsey Pounds are also used and are equal in value. Credit cards accepted at the Mermaid Tavern and White House Hotel. The island is mostly cashless-friendly but carry a little cash.
  • 🦀
Don't skip the crab sandwich at Shell Beach Café or the Mermaid Tavern — fresh Guernsey crab, caught locally, is the island's signature snack.
  • 🧥
Layer up for the ferry crossing. Even on warm days the Channel crossing can be breezy and cold. The island itself is sheltered, but the boat ride isn't.
