Start at Place du Marché at the foot of the Monolithic Church cliff face, walk up through the Collegiate Church cloister, past the King's Keep (Tour du Roy), along the old ramparts, and back down through the wine-shop lined Rue Guadet. The entire village core is within this loop.

Walk out of the village through the vineyard lanes to the Grande Muraille — the isolated ruins of a 12th-century Dominican monastery wall standing alone among the vines. A peaceful contrast to the busy village streets.

Wear proper shoes. The medieval calades (cobblestones) are polished smooth and extremely slippery, especially when wet. Heels and flat soles are a genuine hazard — sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes only.

Book the Monolithic Church in advance. Guided tours are the only way in, and they sell out — especially in summer. Book at least a week ahead at the Saint-Emilion Tourist Office website.

Limited accessibility. Saint-Emilion is not wheelchair or stroller-friendly. If mobility is a concern, the Train Touristique (a small trackless tourist train) loops the vineyards and key monuments without requiring cobblestone walking.

Buy wine — they'll ship it. Almost every wine shop (caviste) in town ships internationally. No need to lug bottles back to the ship; they handle insurance and customs.

Try the real macarons. Saint-Emilion's macarons (dating to 1620) are soft almond-meringue rounds baked on paper — nothing like Parisian macarons. Pick them up fresh at a local fabrique near the Tourist Office.

Afternoon closures. Smaller shops and some restaurants close between 14:00–19:00. Aim for lunch between noon and 13:30 to catch full service.
