Insider Tips

  • 💳
Norway is virtually cashless. You don't need Norwegian Krone — Visa and Mastercard (with PIN) are accepted everywhere, including the public toilets, small cafes, and the Baroniet ticket desk.
  • 🎟
Pre-book the Barony when your ship is large. The manor house tour can sell out when multiple cruise calls overlap. Book baroniet.no tickets in advance if your ship carries over 500 passengers.
  • 🌧
Dress in layers — fjord weather changes fast. Pack a waterproof windbreaker and sturdy walking shoes. Even in summer, a rain shower can blow in quickly off the mountains.
  • 🍏
Try Hardanger apple cider. The Hardanger region is Norway's orchard country. Pick up a bottle of the local sparkling cider at a village shop — far tastier than anything from the ship's bar.
  • 🚌
Bondhusvatnet is a must — but needs transport. The glacier lake (the highlight of the region) is reached from the Sundal trailhead, about 30-40 minutes by car from Rosendal, then a ~2.5 km walk to the lake. Book a ship excursion or a local taxi in advance; it's not walkable from the dock.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚶 Walk

Free

The cruise pier sits right in the village center — nearly all attractions, including Barony Rosendal and its rose gardens, are within a 5–15 minute walk.

🚕 Taxi

Metered (varies)

Local taxis available on request through Kvinnherad Taxi (+47 917 81 000). Useful for reaching Folgefonna National Park or Bondhus Glacier, well outside the village.

🚌 Public Bus

NOK 30–80 (~–8)

Regional buses serve the wider Hardanger area but run infrequently; schedules may not align well with cruise port hours. Check Skyss or Entur apps.

🚲 Bicycle Rental

Approx. NOK 200–350/day (~–33)

Bikes can be rented locally and are ideal for the scenic flat terrain around the fjord, including the road to Bondhusvatnet.
