Getting Ashore

All cruise ships tender into Rathlin Island — there is no deep-water cruise pier.

Tendering into Church Bay

  • 1
Anchor & tenderYour ship anchors in Church Bay. Ship's tenders (or Zodiacs on expedition vessels) ferry passengers to the harbour pontoon at the centre of the village — a short ride.
  • 2
At the pierThe Boathouse Visitor Centre, McCuaig's Bar, the Manor House café, and a small shop are all within a 2-minute walk. Minibus and bike hire operators meet arriving tenders here.
  • 3
Getting to West LightThe RSPB Seabird Centre is 4.5 miles west — too far to walk in a day call. Take the Puffin Bus (approx. £5–6 return, cash preferred) or hire a bicycle from the harbour.

💡 Pro move: No ATM on the island. Bring GBP cash for the Puffin Bus, bike hire, and small stalls. Major venues accept cards.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Rathlin Island has no dedicated cruise pier — all ships anchor and tender into Church Bay harbour.

Top Excursions

On this small island, the wildlife and the scenery are the excursion — the Puffin Bus to the seabird centre is the centrepiece of almost every call.

Wildlife

RSPB West Light Seabird Centre

Northern Ireland's largest seabird colony clings to the cliffs at the island's western tip. In season (late April–July) tens of thousands of puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes nest here. Staff are on hand with scopes. The adjacent West Lighthouse is famously built 'upside down' — the light sits at the cliff base to pierce low fog.

Boathouse Visitor Centre & Marconi Heritage

Right at the harbour, the Boathouse Museum tells the island's story through artefacts, photos, and tales of over 40 shipwrecks. A short walk away in the harbour car park, the Marconi Memorial commemorates the world's first commercial wireless telegraphy link, sent from Rathlin's East Lighthouse to Ballycastle in 1898.

Culture

Robert the Bruce's Cave (Boat/Zodiac)

According to legend, the Scottish king sheltered in a sea cave on Rathlin's rugged northeast cliffs (below the East Lighthouse) in 1306. Watching a spider persist at spinning inspired his famous 'try, try again' ethos. The cave is best reached by Zodiac or small boat from the ship.

Insider Tips

  • 💷
Bring GBP cash. There is no ATM on Rathlin Island. The Puffin Bus, bike hire, and small craft stalls typically require cash. McCuaig's Bar and the Manor House accept cards.
  • 🐦
Puffin window: late April to late July. Outside this season puffins are at sea — other seabirds (guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes) are still present but the spectacle is reduced.
  • 🌦️
Layer up regardless of the forecast. Atlantic weather changes in minutes. A windproof, waterproof jacket is essential even on a sunny morning.
  • 🚌
Board the Puffin Bus immediately. Minibus operators meet tenders at the pier. Seats are limited — go straight to them before exploring the village, or you may wait for the next run.
  • 📵
Download offline maps before tendering. Mobile coverage is patchy across the island. Google Maps offline for Rathlin Island saves a lot of confusion on the roads.
