Insider Tips

  • 📱
Mobile pay is mandatory. China is nearly cashless — Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card linked is essential. Credit cards are not accepted most places. Set this up before you arrive.
  • 🔐
VPN before you board. Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western apps are blocked in China. Install a VPN or get an international eSIM (Airalo/Nomad) that bypasses the firewall before you arrive.
  • 🗺️
Navigation: Use Apple Maps (works well in China) or download Amap (Gaode) offline. Have all destinations written in Chinese characters to show taxi drivers.
  • 🛂
Visa required for most nationalities. Confirm your cruise qualifies for visa-free group excursions, or arrange a Chinese tourist visa well in advance. Independent explorers almost always need a visa.
  • 🍺
Try 'beer in a bag'. At street kiosks in the Old Town, fresh unpasteurized draft beer is sold by the half-kilo in clear plastic bags with a straw. It's a Qingdao institution — very cheap and surprisingly good.
