Getting Ashore

All ships tender to the small marina dock in Santa Isabel on the island's northern tip.

Getting Ashore

  • 1

  • 2
Arrive Santa Isabel dockYou step off directly into the small town of Santa Isabel (locally called 'Town'). Lover's Bridge and local taxis are within a 5-minute walk.
  • 3
Get aroundRent a golf cart or 4x4 UTV ('mule') at the pier — roughly $50–70 USD/day — to circle the 17 km island road at your own pace. Taxis (flat-rate pickup trucks) are also available; agree on the price before boarding.

💡 Pro move: ATM supply is unreliable — bring Colombian Pesos or small US dollar bills. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside a few hotels.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring cash (COP). There is only one ATM on the island and it frequently runs out. Credit cards are rarely accepted. US dollars are sometimes taken but at a poor rate.
  • Tender timing matters. Only small and expedition ships call here — tender lines move quickly, but always check your ship's last tender time. Missing it on this remote island is not an option.
  • 🌊
Reef-safe sunscreen only. Providencia is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Chemical sunscreens are harmful to the reef and locally frowned upon — bring mineral sunscreen or buy locally.
  • 🦀
Black crab migration (Apr–Jul). If visiting spring through early summer, you may see millions of black land crabs crossing the road. Parts of the main road may be temporarily closed — magical but plan accordingly.
  • 🛺
Rent a golf cart at the pier. The entire island loop is only 17 km — renting a UTV or golf cart ($50–70 USD/day) is the best way to see every beach, viewpoint, and village at your own pace.
