Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Pozzallo's working commercial harbor; the town center and beaches are a 1.5–2 km walk along an unshaded industrial road — use the shuttle.

Getting Into Town

  • 1
Ship shuttle to Piazza delle RimembranzeMost cruise lines run a paid or complimentary shuttle from the pier to the main square. This is strongly recommended — the port road is unattractive, traffic-heavy, and exposed.
  • 2
Taxis at the pierA small number of taxis wait at the port gate. Negotiate fares to town (~€8–10), Modica (~€30–35 one-way), or Ragusa Ibla (~€40–45 one-way). Supply is limited — book a return too.
  • 3
Organized shore excursionsFor Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Noto, or combo Val di Noto tours, the ship's excursion or a pre-booked private driver is the safest option. Public trains exist but schedules are infrequent and missing the ship is a real risk.

💡 Pro move: The Malta catamaran (Virtu Ferries, ~90 min to Valletta) departs from the same port — only worth it if your ship offers a very long port call.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Pozzallo's port is a working commercial and ferry harbor; cruise infrastructure is minimal but ships dock alongside the Molo di Ponente.

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Take the shuttle, skip the walk. The 1.5–2 km between the pier and town runs through an industrial port zone — no shade, no scenery. The ship shuttle or a €8 taxi is well worth it.
  • 🍫
Modica chocolate is unique. Cold-process Aztec chocolate has a grainy, spiced texture unlike anything in a standard chocolate shop. Buy a few bars at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto — the oldest in Sicily and highly giftable.
  • 😴
Siesta closes everything 1:30–4:30 PM. Shops, churches, and many cafes shut during afternoon siesta. Plan beach time or a long seafood lunch for this window.
  • 🚖
Don't rely on public transport to Ragusa or Modica. Trains are infrequent and delays can make you miss the ship. Book a ship excursion or pre-arrange a private driver who guarantees your return time.
  • 🌊
Raganzino Beach is quieter. Just west of the main beach, Spiaggia Raganzino is smaller and more sheltered — favored by locals and less crowded than Pietre Nere in peak summer.
