Gozo Island, Malta

Malta's quieter sister island moves at its own unhurried pace — where temples older than Stonehenge stand beside baroque church domes, red-sand beaches meet crystal-clear coves, and the scent of wood-fired bread drifts through limestone villages.

Getting Ashore

Gozo is a tender port — ships anchor offshore and run boats to the Mgarr Harbour quay, shared with the local car-ferry terminal.

Getting Ashore at Mgarr

  • 1
Tender to Mgarr QuayShips anchor in Mgarr Harbour. Tender boats drop passengers at the Mgarr quayside. There is no dedicated cruise terminal — the landing area is a working ferry pier.
  • 2
Transport at the PierHop-On Hop-Off buses (City Sightseeing and Gozo Sightseeing) wait at the pier exit and sync with ship arrivals. White taxis are also at hand — agree a price before boarding. Bolt and eCabs apps work well for rideshare.
  • 3
Going It AlonePublic bus 301 runs from Mgarr to Victoria (Rabat) every 30 minutes for around €2.50 cash. The harbour sits at the bottom of a steep hill — walking to town is hard work in summer heat; transport is strongly recommended.

💡 Pro move: Large cruise ships (MSC, Royal Caribbean, NCL) typically dock in Valletta on the main island and offer shore excursions with a ferry crossing to Gozo — check your ship's schedule.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Gozo has no dedicated cruise pier; all ships use the Mgarr Harbour quay as a tender landing.

Gozitan Food & Market Tour

Gozo's food culture is distinctly its own: wood-fired ftira flatbreads topped with local sheep's milk cheese (gbejniet), slow-cooked rabbit stew, and hand-harvested sea salt from the Xwejni salt pans. A tour combining the bakery village of Nadur and the Marsalforn salt pans is a memorable cultural snapshot.

Insider Tips

  • Watch your tender timing. Last tenders back to the ship fill up fast. Build in an extra 45–60 minutes of buffer, especially in peak summer when the quay gets congested.
  • 🚌
Hop-On Hop-Off is the easiest option. Both operators (City Sightseeing and Gozo Sightseeing) park right at the pier exit. They cover all major sites and sync with ship arrivals — buy tickets on the bus.
  • 🍞
Try the Gozo ftira. Stop at Maxokk Bakery in Nadur for wood-fired ftira flatbread fresh from the oven — a uniquely Gozitan taste you won't find on the main island.
  • 🏛️
Ggantija is worth the entrance fee. At ~€10 it's excellent value for one of the world's oldest buildings. Pair it with the nearby Ta' Kola Windmill (included in the ticket).
  • 🏖️
Hondoq cove is near the port. If you just want a beach swim, Hondoq ir-Rummien is only a few kilometres from Mgarr — clear turquoise water and a great view of Comino, without the trek to Ramla.
