Getting from the Ship to the City

  • 1

  • 3
Local busStagecoach and First Bus routes run from near the terminal to the city center. A contactless card tap is easiest — cash is rarely needed on Portsmouth buses.

Insider Tips

  • 💳
Go cashless. Contactless card and Apple/Google Pay are accepted absolutely everywhere in Portsmouth — buses, taxis, museums, pubs. You don't need cash.
  • 🚌
Skip the walk from the terminal. The ~2-mile walk from Portsmouth International Port to the Historic Dockyard passes through industrial areas. Take the ship's shuttle, a taxi (£7-12), or local bus instead.
  • 🏛
Book the Historic Dockyard in advance. Entry includes HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior, and more — great value but queues build in summer. Buy tickets online before arriving.
  • ☁️
Pack a layer. Portsmouth is breezy year-round. Even in summer, the harbour wind can be sharp — bring a light windproof jacket.
  • 📸
Active Navy base caution. Portsmouth is a working Royal Navy base. Do not photograph active warships or security installations where signs prohibit it.
