Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Never walk out of the port gate. Portland is an active commercial port — walking on the estate is prohibited for safety reasons. Always use the free shuttle.
  • 🎟️
Pre-book Jurassic Coast excursions. Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are hard to reach by public transport in a port day — local cruise tour operators fill up fast on busy call days.
  • 💷
Bring pounds sterling. Cards are accepted widely in Weymouth, but smaller Portland island stalls and car parks often want cash.
  • 👟
Wear walking shoes. Church Ope Cove and the quarry paths involve uneven limestone terrain; Durdle Door has a steep coastal descent.
  • 🌧️
Pack a waterproof layer. Portland is exposed and weather can turn fast — even in summer a shower is likely. The cliff walks are spectacular regardless.
