Getting Ashore

Mid-sized ships dock at the Portimão Cruise Terminal on the Arade River; larger vessels anchor offshore and tender passengers to the marina dock nearby.

Getting Ashore in Portimão

  • 1
Pier arrival (ships ≤215 m)You dock at the Cais de Comercio terminal on the Arade River, steps from the marina. The city center is a 15-20 minute flat riverside walk; Praia da Rocha beach is about 2.5 km (a 30-minute walk, or a quick taxi/bus ride) to the south.
  • 2
Tender arrival (larger ships)Ships anchor in Portimão Bay. Tenders drop you at the marina dock adjacent to the cruise terminal — the same starting point as pier arrivals. Allow 15–20 min for the tender ride plus queue time.
  • 3
Transport at the dockTaxis and Bolt/Uber are plentiful and cheap (€4–8 to center or beach). Tuk-tuks wait dockside for quick jaunts — agree a price first. A tourist train loops between the pier, Praia da Rocha, and the city center.

💡 Pro move: Port expansion works beginning early 2026 will dredge the channel to accommodate ships up to 220 m; larger vessels will still tender for the foreseeable future.

Insider Tips

  • ☀️
Sun protection is essential. The Algarve sun is intense even in spring. The walks to the beach and city center have minimal shade — wear sunscreen, a hat, and bring water.
  • 👟
Wear sturdy shoes. The old town uses traditional Portuguese calçada cobblestones — beautiful but slippery. Skip sandals or smooth soles.
  • 🚤
Book Benagil RIB tours early. Tours from the marina fill up fast in summer. Pre-book before your cruise or queue at the marina at first light. Only RIB/kayak tours enter the cave itself.
  • Larger ships will tender. If your ship is over ~215 m, expect a tender ride. Factor in 20–30 min each way at busy times. Check your ship's daily program the evening before.
  • 🐟
Eat the sardines. Portimão's grilled sardines are the real deal — cheap, fresh, and charcoal-grilled. The riverside restaurants near Ponte Velha are your best bet.
