History

Fort Saint-Elme

A star-shaped fortress perched on the hill between Port-Vendres and Collioure. Its origins go back to a medieval watchtower, but the bastioned star fort you see today dates from the 16th century under Charles V. The 360° panorama over the coast and Pyrenees makes the steep hike — or tourist train ride from Collioure — worth it. Note: interior access can be restricted during restoration works, so check locally before climbing up.

Insider Tips

  • 🚌
The €1 bus is your best friend. Lio Line 540 runs every 20–30 minutes and connects Port-Vendres with Collioure (north) and Banyuls-sur-Mer (south) for just €1 each way. Buy from the driver.
  • 🐟
Eat anchovies here. Collioure anchovies — hand-salted and packed in olive oil — are a protected local product (IGP). Try them on toast at any harbourside restaurant. Nothing like the tinned variety.
  • 💶
Bring some cash. Cards are accepted everywhere, but the bus, small market stalls, and some fishmongers are cash-only.
  • 🕐
Siesta is real. Many shops close 12:30–15:00. Restaurants stay open for lunch service. Plan shopping for morning or late afternoon.
  • 💨
Beware La Tramontane. The region's famous dry northerly wind can make a sunny 22°C day feel much colder. Pack a light jacket.
