Collioure, Occitanie, France

Perched on the Côte Vermeille where the Pyrenees tumble into the Mediterranean, Collioure seduced Matisse, Derain, and a generation of Fauvist painters — its candy-colored harbor, medieval castle, and salted anchovy tradition are just as beguiling today.

  • 3
Day trips by trainCollioure station is a 15-minute walk from the harbor. Trains run south to Banyuls-sur-Mer (10 min) and north to Perpignan (25 min) for those wanting to explore further.

Insider Tips

  • Tender tickets: Collect yours early — Collioure is a one-ship-at-a-time anchorage but tenders can queue in peak season (July–August).
  • 🐟
Anchovies as souvenirs: Vacuum-packed salted anchovies from Roque or Desclaux travel well and are genuinely unique to this coast. Buy at the source, not the souvenir shops.
  • 💶
Cash and cards: Most restaurants and shops take cards, but small anchovy producers and market stalls may prefer cash. ATMs are near the Château Royal.
  • 🎨
Galleries are everywhere: Many are artist-owned studios in the old town. You can buy directly — prices range from postcards to originals. Browsing is always welcome.
  • ☀️
Heat in summer: July–August temperatures hit 30°C+ with little shade on the beach. Carry water and wear sun protection — the coastal path and hilltop fort especially.
