Getting Ashore

Your arrival method depends on ship size — tender or gangway, you step out right in the heart of town.

Getting Ashore in Piran

  • 1
Small Ships (Windstar, Ponant, Seabourn)Compact luxury vessels dock directly at Piran Harbour Pier (Pristanišče Piran). Walk the gangway straight onto the waterfront — Tartini Square is 2 minutes ahead.
  • 2
Larger Ships — Tender ServiceShips anchor in the bay; tenders run to the harbor pier, placing you immediately at the edge of the old town. Follow the waterfront promenade to Tartini Square (150 m).
  • 3
No buses or taxis in the old townPiran's historic core is entirely car-free. Everything worth seeing is on foot. Wear comfortable, grippy shoes — the polished limestone paving gets slippery when wet.

💡 Pro move: Some larger vessels call at the Port of Koper (~25 min drive) and run shuttle coaches to Piran. Check your ship's daily program to confirm your drop-off point.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Piran has a small harbour pier used by compact ships; larger vessels anchor offshore and tender passengers directly to the same waterfront.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear grippy shoes. Piran's polished limestone paving is beautiful but dangerously slippery when wet. Skip the flip-flops if there's any chance of rain.
  • 💶
Carry a little cash. Cards are widely accepted but the bell tower, town walls, and some market stalls are cash-only. €20 covers most paid attractions.
  • 🛒
Buy Piran salt. The Soline shop on Tartini Square sells hand-harvested Solni cvet (fleur de sel) — lightweight, authentic, and genuinely excellent. Best souvenir in town.
  • 🍽️
Eat at Fritolin pri Cantini. This tiny kitchen window on First of May Square serves outstanding fresh fried seafood for a few euros. Order at the window, grab a bench, buy wine from Cantina next door.
  • Morning beats afternoon. Tour buses from Koper and day-trippers arrive mid-morning. Tender passengers who go ashore early get Tartini Square largely to themselves.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisUber launched in Slovenia in May 2025 but only covers Ljubljana. Bolt operates in nearby Koper but not in Piran. No rideshare apps are reliably available in Piran itself.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Hop-on hop-off coastal tours cover Koper, Izola, Piran, and Portorož with hourly departures. Tours often include food and wine tastings. Ideal for cruise passengers with limited time.
