Getting Ashore

Peñíscola is a tender port — your ship anchors in the bay and small boats ferry you to the local marina at the base of the old-town rock.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Collect a tender ticketQueue at the gangway for a numbered tender ticket. Busy days (summer) can mean 30-minute waits; go early or mid-afternoon.
  • 2
Ride to Puerto de PeñíscolaTenders land at the fishing harbour on the south side of the rock — a 5-min boat ride. Everything is within easy walking distance from here.
  • 3
Head into the old townPortal de Sant Pere (the medieval harbour gate) is a 5-min flat walk from the pier. The castle is a further 15-min uphill climb through winding cobbled alleys.
  • 4
Returning to the shipWatch tender cut-off times carefully — queues build before all-aboard. Allow at least 45 min buffer from last activity to the pier.

💡 Pro move: Cobblestones throughout the old town are polished and can be slippery. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. The upper town is not wheelchair accessible.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear proper shoes. The old town is paved with polished river cobblestones that are treacherous in flip-flops or sandals, even on dry days. Closed-toe walking shoes are essential.
  • Tender queues build fast. Get ashore early on busy summer days, or wait until mid-afternoon when the rush clears. Always allow 45 min to return to the pier before all-aboard.
  • 🎬
Game of Thrones fans: The walls and seaward gates of Peñíscola stood in for Meereen in Season 6. The castle approach road and the lower walls are the most recognisable filming spots.
  • 🍚
Try arroz a banda — rice cooked in concentrated fish stock and served with aioli. It's the signature dish of the Costa del Azahar and far tastier than standard paella.
  • 🏖️
Playa Sur is right next to the tender pier — calmer and shallower than Playa Norte, perfect for a quick swim without wandering far.
