A 13th-century fortress perched 64 metres above the Mediterranean, Peñíscola is Spain's most dramatic walled town — once a Papal seat, later a Hollywood backdrop, and still entirely walkable from the tender dock.
Peñíscola is a tender port — your ship anchors in the bay and small boats ferry you to the local marina at the base of the old-town rock.
💡 Pro move: Cobblestones throughout the old town are polished and can be slippery. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. The upper town is not wheelchair accessible.
Cruise ships anchor off Peñíscola and tender passengers to the town's small fishing harbour.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines | Anchored off Peñíscola bay — tender to Puerto de Peñíscola📍 | Tendered |
| Small expedition ships | May anchor closer inshore — tender to same harbour📍 | Tendered |
The old town and beaches are easily explored independently, but excursions open up the stunning Maestrat hinterland beyond.
Built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century and later the exile palace of Antipope Benedict XIII, the castle offers fascinating history and panoramic sea views from its rooftop terrace. Entry ~€5.
Find Peñíscola castle tours →Wander the whitewashed alleyways, spot the Casa de las Conchas (a façade encrusted with sea shells), pass through Portal Fosc and Portal de Sant Pere, and find El Bufador — a natural blowhole that roars when the sea swells.
Find Peñíscola walking tours →A 5 km Blue Flag beach of fine golden sand stretches north of the old town with sunbed hire, showers, lifeguards, and a promenade of seafood restaurants. The postcard view of the castle rising from the sea makes it doubly worthwhile.
Find Peñíscola beach excursions →Perched on a hilltop about 75 km inland, Morella is one of Spain's best-preserved walled medieval towns, dominated by a Gothic castle. Best done as an organised excursion — around 1.5 hours each way from Peñíscola.
Find Morella day trip tours →Europe's longest navigable underground river, located about 105 km south near La Vall d'Uixó. Guided boat tours glide through illuminated limestone chambers. Worth it for cave enthusiasts on a full-day trip.
Find Coves de Sant Josep tours →Everything in Peñíscola is reachable on foot — the old town, castle, and beaches are all within 20 minutes of the tender pier.
From the tender pier, follow the harbour promenade north to Portal de Sant Pere, climb through the winding alleyways of the casco antiguo past the Casa de las Conchas and El Bufador blowhole, up to the castle entrance and rooftop, then back down via Portal Fosc.
Head north along the seafront promenade from the fishing harbour past Playa Sur to Playa Norte. The beach stretches away to the left while the old town rock rises dramatically on your right — the classic Peñíscola panorama. Return the same way or take a dip.
