Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain cruise port

Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain

The White Island delivers a striking double life — ancient Phoenician ramparts and UNESCO cobblestone streets by day, legendary beach clubs and sunset bars by night. Most cruise passengers arrive for the history and leave wishing they had more time.

Getting Ashore

Ships dock at Es Botafoc pier across the bay from the old town; the easiest connection is the 10-minute Aquabus water taxi.

Getting from Ship to Shore

  • 1
Aquabus Water Taxi (recommended)Runs from Marina Botafoch (5-min walk from pier) to the Old Port below Dalt Vila. Approx. €3 one-way, €4.50 return. Runs frequently in season.
  • 2
Cruise Line ShuttleMost lines run a continuous shuttle to the port gate area (Passeig de Vara de Rey). Typically €8-12 for a day pass — check on board.
  • 3
TaxiTaxis wait at the pier exit. €10-15 to the old town; 5-10 minutes. In peak July-August, supply can be tight — arrange a return time with your driver.
  • 4
WalkFlat 3 km along the marina promenade — doable in 35-40 min but exposed to summer sun. Better as an evening stroll than a midday trek.

💡 Pro move: Max 2 ships dock simultaneously; total daily disembarkations capped at 3,000 by port authority. Congestion at the pier is usually minimal.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise ships dock at Es Botafoc pier on the north side of the harbor — no tendering required.

History

Dalt Vila & the Phoenician Necropolis

Ibiza's UNESCO-listed fortified old town is the unmissable centerpiece. The museum entry is just €2.40.

Balearic Food & Tapas in the Old Town

Start at the Old Port monument, enter Dalt Vila through the Portal de ses Taules, and wind uphill through whitewashed alleys to the cathedral and ramparts. The views over the harbor and cruise ships are spectacular. Wear real shoes — the smooth ancient cobblestones are treacherous in sandals.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear proper shoes for Dalt Vila. The ancient cobblestones are steep, smooth, and genuinely slippery. Flip-flops or dressy sandals are a bad idea — you will struggle or fall.
  • 🚤
Use the Aquabus. The water taxi from Marina Botafoch to the Old Port costs ~€3 and is faster, cooler, and more scenic than walking. Buy your return ticket at the dock.
  • ☀️
Start the old town early. Ibiza bakes in summer — the narrow cobblestone streets of Dalt Vila offer little shade. Get up there by 9:30 AM and return to the beach by midday.
  • 🚕
Arrange your taxi back. In July and August taxis are in short supply. If you head out to the southwest coast, Es Vedrà, or a remote beach, agree a pickup time with your driver — missing the ship from Ibiza would be a very expensive mistake.
  • 🍽️
Try bullit de peix. Ibiza's signature fish stew is the real local dish — not paella. Find it at a family restaurant in La Marina or along the Talamanca beachfront, not at the tourist traps on the main drag.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ UberUber launched in Ibiza in November 2023. Spanish regulations require pre-booking at least 30 minutes in advance — not available for spontaneous street hailing. Options include Uber Black, Comfort, and Uber Van.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus

🚕 Taxi

€8–€12

Taxis queue at the port exit; the ride to Ibiza Town takes 5–7 minutes. A €2 port-pickup supplement applies. Also bookable via the Taxi Ibiza app.

🚌 Port Bus (Sagales)

€4 one-way / €6 return

Official shuttle bus picks up outside the terminal and drops near the Formentera Ferry Terminal, close to the city center. Runs every 30 minutes on weekdays only (no weekend service).

🚌 Public Bus (Line 10)

~€1.50

Budget option connecting the port area to Ibiza Town. Runs approximately every 30 minutes in peak season, but schedules can be irregular.

⛵ Water Taxi / Sea Bus

€4 one-way / €6 return

A scenic 15-minute-frequency shuttle across the harbor to the edge of the old town. Jetty is about 200 m from the terminal — a lovely way to arrive.

🚶 Walk

Free

About 3 km (1.9 miles) to Ibiza Town center — roughly 30–40 minutes on foot, longer to Dalt Vila. Manageable in mild weather, but can be hot in summer.
